Perhaps you have heard of this word “galactagogues” and have no idea what it means. Or maybe you’re reading this article because you’ve never heard of galactagogues before and are curious what they have to do with breastfeeding. Either way, I’m glad you’re here! In this article you will learn what are galactagogues, how they impact milk production, and how your breastfeeding journey could benefit from an increase in galactagogues. So let’s dig in!

Galactagogues – What Are They?

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to eat something that can boost milk supply naturally? That’s exactly what galactagogues are! The word “galactagogues” is a big word that is given to foods that have the ability to naturally boost milk production in lactating mothers.

Now, there is some debate about if what you eat really impacts your breastmilk and/or milk supply. Some sources will tell you that since breastmilk is made in your breasts, what you eat really doesn’t impact your milk. However, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of mothers who say otherwise.

Many mothers, myself included, have noticed their bodies being able to produce more milk after eating a certain meal or simply ensuring they are consuming enough calories and water throughout the day.

This brings up an important point. How many calories you eat DOES impact milk supply! With my first baby, I suffered with low milk production. The pediatrician gave me formula samples to try with my baby. However, she hated the formula and it made her spit up more! Fortunately I was able to boost my milk supply! Foods That Are Galactagogues

Below are some well-known galactagogues. You can easily add these foods to stir fries, yogurt, salads, soups, or simply have as a snack.

  1. Fennel
  2. Garlic
  3. Dark, leafy greens
  4. Chickpeas
  5. Oats
  6. Almonds and other nuts
  7. Papaya

A Word Of Caution

A word of caution on papaya. If you are pregnant and breastfeeding, it might be better to avoid papaya. There may be some risk of a miscarriage and/or triggering labor with eating papaya and/or papaya seeds. So, if I were you, personally, I would just avoid papaya all together and eat something else that can boost milk supply.
