When we think about breastfeeding, almost immediately we picture a super cute mother wearing a smile while looking at her perfectly content infant suckling happily at her breast. Why does this image come to our minds? Simply because it is often portrayed as this perfect relationship! Here’s the truth – breastfeeding is not as easy as you think. Is it worth it? Absolutely! Is it challenging? Absolutely!

The purpose of this article is not to discourage mothers from breastfeeding. I am all for breastfeeding! However, some of us walk into breastfeeding with high hopes and disillusioned ideas of what breastfeeding will actually be like. In this article, you will learn some of the challenges you may face during breastfeeding, how these challenges impact your mental health, and how you can find real answers to common breastfeeding challenges so you can meet your breastfeeding goals and have the best mental health possible along the way! Are you ready? Let’s get to it!

Breastfeeding Enchanted

baby crying

It was 2am and my infant was up for the 3rd time already that night!

“Why is she so hungry?” I asked my husband while feeling my overly engorged breasts. They were so heavy it was painful to sit up. I struggled to get my baby to latch. Then I had a strong let-down – milk flying everywhere! Everywhere but in the one place it should go!

As I brought my baby close to latch on again, I winced in pain. My nipple was bleeding! No sooner had my baby tried to latch on that I had to pull her off.

“What am I doing wrong?!” I desperately asked my husband who was equally as confused and worried as I was.

Horrified, I looked at my hands covered in breastmilk. My baby was still screaming and I was clueless as to what to do next. My husband picked up the phone and called the nurse on call.

Welcome to day 6 of my breastfeeding journey!

Feeling Disappointed In Breastfeeding

So many mothers feel disappointed in their breastfeeding (bf) journey. Why? Partly because we have a magical, perfectly peaceful and pleasant picture of bf painted for us everywhere we go. Of course that is what every mother hopes for. The reality is that only a hand full of lucky mothers actually get that kind of bf experience.

How should you respond to that disappointment? When the going gets tough, do you give up? What if you have no support and need support? If you need advice on how to build a great support system around you, check out my article Building Your Support Network. A strong support system will prevent you from giving up bf! Be sure to check out that article!

As you can tell in my story above, I struggled with LOTS of disappointments and struggles with breastfeeding right off the bat! I mean, by the first week, I had sore, cracked, bleeding nipples, extreme engorgement, and a baby who struggled to latch and stay latched. Additionally, I was healing from a 3rd/4th degree tear, I had diastasis recti, hemorrhoids, next to no sleep, and lots of fear and disappointments.

These disappointments and challenges can take a toll on your mental health. Many mothers are not prepared for the challenges breastfeeding can bring to their overall well-being. Sometimes it is so mentally exhausting that mothers quit nursing their baby. Mental health is important and should be prioritized!

However, I wonder if these mothers had had the answers to their breastfeeding challenges if they would have continued their breastfeeding journey?

What about you? Would you prefer to have the answers to common breastfeeding challenges right in front of you? It would save you time and energy and your mental sanity!

Get Help With Breastfeeding!

words problem and solution with the word problem crossed out

So many people believe that bf should be so natural. I believe many first time mothers start their breastfeeding journey expecting it to be relatively simple. Sure there may be some challenges, but how hard can it be, right?

This was me! I had high hopes and dreams for breastfeeding. It was something I wanted to do for both my baby’s health and mine. However, the amount of stress I faced trying to find solutions to these challenges was overwhelming!

I often yelled, “Why is this so hard? What am I doing wrong?”

Giving up wasn’t an option for me. So I kept striving to find answers.

Hours of my day were spent searching online for answers. I called nurses on call. We went to see lactation consultants. One night we even had to go to the ER because my baby had been screaming for 7 hours straight and NOTHING I was doing was making it stop!

Honestly, the “help” I received from these places were not much help at all.

Colic was one of my biggest challenges with breastfeeding (however latching, milk supply, engorgement, bleeding nipples, pumping challenges, etc. were all equally as frustrating!).

Their Help Didn’t Help

The lactation consultant couldn’t give me answers for colic or my baby’s poor latch. The ER nurse just told me to breastfeeding in different positions to help with colic and my poor nipples. When I called the nurse on call in desperation for colic, she said, “You’re doing everything right”. Obviously there was a huge disconnect somewhere!

If my baby was fine and I was doing everything right, then why was she screaming for 8 hours a day every day for months?

Fellow breastfeeding mothers! If you find yourself in this situation – struggling with breastfeeding and not finding answers. When you find yourself spending hours of your day searching everywhere for solutions to your breastfeeding challenges, stop!

Stop wasting your precious time and energy on finding answers when those things should be spent on you and your baby!
